The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has announced that it will complete the implementation of the newly approved National Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education within nine months.
This timeline was revealed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, during the launch of the 2025 Quality Assurance Monitoring and Evaluation Exercise held at Federal Government College, Malali, Kaduna State, on Monday.
Dr. Ajayi explained that the standards were developed by the Commission and approved at the 68th National Council on Education meeting held from October 7 to 10, 2024. The official launch was conducted by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in February 2025.
“Copies of the minimum standards were distributed to state delegates at the launch for implementation across the various states. The implementation is expected to be completed within nine months, after which the Commission will commence enforcement of the minimum standards,” Ajayi said.
He noted that the monitoring and evaluation exercise is designed to assess and enhance the quality of education across senior secondary schools in the country.
“We are committed to ensuring that every senior secondary school in the country provides a conducive learning environment that fosters academic excellence, critical thinking, and the development of well-rounded individuals,” he stated.
Ajayi linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to educational reform and national development, emphasizing that improving learning outcomes and establishing accountability measures are central to the Commission’s goals.
“The programme promotes best practices, empowers educators with constructive feedback and support, and enhances their skills to raise teaching quality and learner outcomes,” he added.
Muhammad Bello, Kaduna State’s Commissioner for Education, represented by Usman Zaria, welcomed the Commission’s choice of Kaduna for the flag-off. He noted that even with significant educational investments, monitoring and evaluation have consistently fallen short.
Bello expressed the state’s enthusiasm for the initiative launching in Kaduna and pledged the state government’s complete support.
