Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi has tasked graduates to be at the forefront of development by taking the lead in innovation, enterprise and attitudinal change.Obi in his lecture titled “Creativity, innovation and enterprise: A critical intersection for economic development in Africa”, the former governor said Nigerian graduates have a strong history of excellence, adding that most of those blazing the trail globally and making the nation’s proud were trained in the country.
He expressed confidence in Nigerian graduates saying the nation has the best all over the world. He therefore charged the graduating students to think outside the box and contribute their best to the development of the country through innovative approach and enterprise.Obi who lamented that the country is criminalised said there is need for a new direction to solve its myriad of problems.
Insisting that one of the yardsticks to measure a country’s growth is the quality of its education sector, Obi urged the Federal Government to invest in it to drive development and positively impact the economy.
“Not much has been inputted in the education sector, as Nigeria’s education budget in the last 10 years was a meagre $4.5bn, while South Africa’s budget in 2018 was $17bn.He said government should consider providing support for private universities to develop the sector.
The vice chancellor, Prof Chinedum Peace Babalola tasked the graduating students to apply their knowledge to solving Nigeria’s challenges and distinguish themselves in their profession. She charged them to come up with a roadmap to addressing these challenges.
Babalola also appealed to the Federal Government to extend funding facilities from TETFUND to private universities.
The chancellor, Winifred Awosika charged the graduands to utilise the knowledge acquired to transform the society positively and indeed the whole world as a whole. She said they should help establish a legacy of ploughing back into their university to make the dream of becoming a global brand a reality.
