Lagos distributes N514m bursary

Lagos State government has begun the distribution of 2014/15 bursary awards to indigenes of the state in all tertiary institutions nationwide.

The 2014/15 set of bursary and local scholarship to Lagos indigenes is worth about N514.1m, and goes to no fewer than 2, 680 new beneficiaries and 6, 940 old recipients.

At the presentation ceremony of ATM Verve cards to the beneficiaries, scholarship awards worth N54.5m were doled out to a total of 1, 596 undergraduates. The awards range from N20, 000 to N50, 000, depending on beneficiary’s course of study.

Director, Lagos State Scholarship Board, Omauton Jegede, said that it was another landmark of the current administration’s effort to empower the youths.

Jegede said the provision of bursary and scholarship was to reduce the suffering of indigent students studying in tertiary institutions, “Who ordinarily could have abandoned their studies because of financial constraints.
“Through this gesture, the Lagos State government has provided succour to the downtrodden in the state. This epitomizes the enviable strides of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode at ensuring that governance has a responsibility to the public…”

She added that 192 Nigerian Law school students and six students from the Maritime Academy, Oron, Akwa Ibom State who are indigenes of Lagos State were awarded N39.6m as bursary.

The state will also expend the sum of N88.9 million on 400 successful candidates who took part in the 2014/15 local scholarship computer-based screening test. They are students with brilliant academic performance and 3.5 grade point average and above.

The sum of N99.6 million was also released for 486 old beneficiaries. In the local scholarship category, N200, 000 will be given to undergraduates, N300, 000 for masters students while doctorate beneficiaries are to take home the sum of N400, 000 each.

It was gathered that the governor has also approved the release of all outstanding bursary payment for 2015, totalling N231.5 million to 6,940 old beneficiaries.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Olabisi Ariyo, said that the gesture was part of a holistic effort at improving the standard of education in the state, as well as providing opportunities for the citizenry irrespective of their socio- economic status.

Ariyo urged the beneficiaries to put the grants to good use and should neither see it as a “meal ticket” nor as their share of the national cake.
