Former first lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”It is on this premise that the Assistant General Manager, Laterna Ventures, Mr Robert Lawson, has advised parents to stir reading habit in their wards by exposing them to books early in life.

Speaking during the monthly reading session organised by the firm as part of effort to stimulate pupils’ interest in reading, Lawson said if children are made to love reading early in life, it will go a long way in shaping their personality and developing the leadership traits in them.

According to him, the exercise, which is also in commemoration of children’s day, is an avenue to kindle parents’ awareness and remind them that for a child to become knowledgeable, he/she must be an avid reader.

He said, “This monthly exercise is very important to us because if we say leaders and readers, it is only fitting that we engage this children early in life. If you stir reading culture in your children early, it becomes part of them, and whatever you obtain from book stays with you and you can fit in in the society and in every sphere of life.

“And so this is our own contribution to encouraging a literate and book-loving society. Every month, we bring children and get any book of interest in their age category and get a celebrity or notable individual to read to the children. But in the spirit of the just concluded children’s day, we brought an 11-year author of “Double A for Adventure, Alisa Daniel-Oniko to celebrate with other kids.”

The little Daniel-Oniko, who did the book reading and signing, said her mum inspires her desire to write through regular exposure to books, “and when I’m reading, I fell like am transporting myself into a different world.”Her mother, Mrs. Esosa-Daniel Oniko, urged parents to show support to their children once they discover any gift or talent in them.
