GOVERNOR Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has raised an alarm over the dearth of qualified English language and mathematics teachers in all government-owned schools in the state.

While paying a courtesy visit on the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. Elias Bogoro, the former federal lawmaker stressed the need for the development of teacher education in the state.

“In Katsina we have no English language or mathematics teachers. Today, one of the biggest problem in my state is the issue of English language and mathematics teachers, and you know that you can’t go anywhere without English language and mathematics. That is the truth. These are some of the major challenges that we are facing.

Masari lamented that the state, which used to be an important seat of learning in the whole northern region has taken the back seat in educational development.

The former speaker of the House of Representatives appealed to TETFund to focus more attention on colleges of educational in the state in order assist it in producing quality teachers at the foundation level, just as he stressed that no nation can make any meaningful development without qualified mathematics and English language teachers.

“We want to thank TETFund for the various intervention projects that they have carried out in Katsina State. And like Oliver Twist, we have come to ask for more. We hope that TETFund will focus more attention on our colleges of education, so that we would produce teachers that teach at the foundation level in particular.

Masari said he joined the governorship race in the state in order to restore the lost glory of education in the state.

Bogoro, in his remarks said education was key to development, and so deserves serious attention from governments at all levels. He assured that TETFUND would continue to support all public tertiary institutions to achieve their goals.

He noted that the organisation has trained over 12, 000 M.Sc students abroad while over 8, 000 PhD students have also benefitted from its sponsorship.

The executive secretary who also informed that TETFund has also provided resources for the development of research in all public tertiary institutions in the country, noted that the ranking of Nigerian universities on the continent has really improved as a result of the impact of the various intervention projects the fund has carried out in them.
