Regular reading broadens knowledge, promotes lifelong learning, says Kida-Musa

Deputy Managing Director, Deepwater District of the Upstream Companies, Total Nigeria, Mr. Ahmadu Kida-Musa, has charged students in the country to make reading a routine practice stressing that it has the capacity to broaden their knowledge.

Speaking at the third “Book Reading Forum” organized by Total Nigeria, for select secondary school students in Lagos, Kida-Musa said early and regular exposure to reading will not only broaden students’ horizon but also engage them meaningfully.

He added that the programme was part of measures to help the country achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Four, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”


In addition, Kida-Musa explained that the exercise hopes to expose young learners to the numerous benefits of reaing thereby preparing the ground for the attainment of the 2030 UNESCO agenda.

Citing Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads,” Kida-Musa, who was represented by the Executive Director, Deepwater, Mr. Joel Hervochon, urged participants to love book and be avid readers.

He said, “Connecting to reading is another way of connecting to living as far as the human intellect is concerned. We must see reading as a way of life. A way of getting into the minds of others for knowledge that educates entertains and provides solutions to the challenges of life.

In this year’s edition, a book titled “The King and the Colony,” written by Olasupo Shasore (SAN) was selected for reading. Students that participated in the exercise were given opportunity to interact and connect with the book author. The book was chosen in line with the ongoing celebration of Lagos@50. Shasore on his part urged young learners not to be distracted by the modern technological devices, adding, “during our time, book captured our imaginations.”
