The Rotary Club of Lagos Island has commissioned a library in Government Senior College, Ikoyi, to commemorate the memory of one of its members, Late Mrs. Sushil. M. Chanrai.

The fully-equipped library, was unveiled under the club’s #Ka-iwe service project and commissioned by the District Governor, District 9110, Remi Bello.

Bello commended the club members for using their time and resources to improve the learning conditions and continuous education of students of Government Senior College, Ikoyi.

He thanked the authorities of the school for giving Rotary the opportunity to execute the library project.

“To improve the reading attitude generally is a very big work, that is why this club came up with the project called ‘Ka-iwe’, which simply means read a book, so we need to encourage people to read,” Bello noted.

He encouraged the students to read more to become wise, adding, “you can actually touch the sky if you read more.”

President of the club, Kamlesh Jain, said the initiative was borne out of commitment to give back to the community and encourage reading culture.

She said: “Basic education is one of the ways we execute our community project, which aims at revitalising the reading culture among students. Renovating and equipping this school library is one of our mandates to encourage reading.

“We want to promote the reading culture in children, especially girls, and also encourage them to know what they need to become in life. Reading always makes you more wise and intelligent.”
