UK’s Loughborough varsity pursues long-term academic collaboration in Nigeria

Loughborough University has reiterated its intention to establish sustained academic partnerships in Nigeria aimed at strengthening local capacity and contributing to national development across key sectors.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the university’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, Professor Sam Grogan, said Loughborough is engaging Nigerian institutions with a view to developing enduring relationships that focus on both infrastructure and human capital.

Grogan cited the university’s existing cooperation with Nigeria’s Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) on scholarship programmes as a foundation for broader collaboration.

He noted that the partnership spans critical sectors such as oil and gas, renewable energy, and other fields tied to Nigeria’s long-term development goals.

He said that the university’s approach is centred on building sustainable impact rather than seeking short-term engagements.

According to him, meaningful development outcomes require long-term commitment, and Loughborough aims to support the growth of skills and systems that can sustain national progress.

Grogan said that while there are no formal contracts currently in place with other institutions, discussions are ongoing and additional engagements are planned during his visit to Nigeria.

He indicated that further meetings with universities are expected later in the week to explore new areas of collaboration.

Professor Amanda Daley, a behavioural medicine scholar at Loughborough, noted that the university’s presence in Nigeria is intentional and part of a strategy to share expertise while also learning from local partners. She added that mutual exchange and collaboration are key to effective partnerships.

Florence Mutero, Global Engagement Officer at the university, recalled previous visits to Nigerian institutions, including the University of Lagos.

She confirmed that Loughborough is continuing talks aimed at deepening institutional ties and broadening the scope of its cooperation in Nigeria’s education sector.
