The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has launched an investigation into mounting allegations of extortion and “obtaining by trick” reportedly targeted at prospective corps members during the NYSC mobilisation process.
In an internal memo dated May 27, 2025, and signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Egaga Patrick Ikani, the university’s Student Affairs Division expressed deep concern over what it described as “unethical, embarrassing, and unacceptable” practices carried out by some Corps Mobilisation Officers (CMOs).
According to the memo, these officers—allegedly in collaboration with certain department heads—have been demanding unauthorised fees from students as part of their mobilisation for national service.
“For the avoidance of doubt, NYSC mobilisation is free and devoid of any form of charges,” the memo stated firmly.
To address the situation, the university has constituted a Secret Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with looking into the allegations retrospectively, with the aim of enforcing appropriate refunds and holding culpable individuals accountable.
The memo warns that any Corps Mobilisation Officer or Head of Department found guilty will have their names forwarded to management alongside unfavourable reports for further disciplinary action.
Students and members of the university community are encouraged to report any breach of this directive directly to the Dean of Students, with assurances of strict confidentiality.
