We don’t regret taking disciplinary measures against erring lecturers, students, UniAbuja affirms
The management of University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), says it has no regrets for taking disciplinary against some of its erring staff and students recently.
The institution recently announced the dismissal of two professors and the demotion of two others for alleged misconduct.The two professors, according to the institution were Prof. Adeniji Adedayo Abiodun of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Prof. Agaptus Buzo – Chibuzo Orji of the Department of Science and Environmental Education.
The demoted lecturers are Dr. Robert Dajal of the Department of Science and Environmental Education, Faculty of Education; and Mr. Gana Sunday of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture.
No fewer than 100 students of the university were also recently expelled by Senate of the institution for their involvement in examination misconduct.
The university’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, who disclosed this in an interview with The Guardian, said the university took the decision after due diligence and after considering reports and recommendations from the Disciplinary Committee set up to look into the allegations against the lecturers and students.He explained that the university has zero tolerance for acts that violates its rules and regulations.
“The university also stated that it has zero tolerance for immorality, acts that violates its rules and regulations and that remains. We are working hard and also concienctazing that lecturers should hold their students the same they would hold and relate with their children because they are supposed to be their moral compass.
“If the staff do not show exemplary character, they would have the moral stand. The University is also trying at different levels to make our staff to imbibe this attitude and our students are held in high esteem, the same way we hold our staff. The rules and regulations guiding the university must be respected at all times.
According to “With regards to the lecturers whose appointment were terminated, when this happened we released a statement to the press and the universities stated exactly what their offences were and those offences remains; nothing has changed.
“With regards to the students who were expelled and some of them rusticated, the situation remains and the university has no regrets about it’s actions, because the is was an action that was taking after due diligence.
He added “The university wouldn’t have taken such measure if those people weren’t given a fair hearing. There were committees set up at different levels and the lecturers and students were in attendance. They faced disciplinary committees that were set up to look into their case. They were given fair hearing before the university took the decision it took.
“We have a brand new administration in place, new vice chancellor of the university Isa very determined to change this negative thought. It is no longer business as usual.
“Staff and students must know that this is a brand new era and interesting transformation going on in the university now and we are hopeful that the pace at which we are going, in a couple of years, this university will be much better.”
