Firm donates STEAM laboratories to Edo, Delta schools

To promote a learning environment where students can participate in hands-on, practical Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), Seplat Energy has launched an initiative to donate well-equipped laboratories to schools in Edo and Delta.

Speaking at Ihogbe College in Benin City, Director of External Affairs and Sustainability, Seplat Energy, Dr. Chioma Nwachukwu, said the company has commenced distinct educational initiatives to achieve quality education for students and teachers in its states of operation.

“Seplat Energy has commenced this initiative with the donation of a well-equipped laboratory to Ihogbe College in Benin City, Edo State. It will extend to more schools in the state and Delta.

“The firm is excited that the STEAM laboratories would further strengthen the application of STEAM learning that the company has continued to promote in schools through the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP),”Dr. Nwachukwu said.

She noted that the laboratory would create a student-centred learning environment, focusing on developing their skills and connecting STEAM subject areas, while preparing them for future careers and the real world.

According to her, STEP equips secondary school teachers with the knowledge, skills and competencies to teach students the STEAM learning model.

Noting that teachers are critical factors to achieving quality education, Dr. Nwachukwu said the firm commenced the STEP initiative to empower teachers with essential STEAM knowledge and skill sets.

Already, she disclosed that the programme has delivered immense outcomes for 634 teachers and over 25,000 students in Delta and Edo States’ secondary schools.

Director of New Energy, Mr. Effiong Okon, explained that the STEP initiative started with teachers training, and has taken the next step by investing in the STEAM laboratory and providing unique gadgets.

Okon said the laboratory will change how students learn and how children’s potentials can be unleashed.

He added that the STEAM laboratory boasts of various science devices and tools, including electrical kits, chemical supplies, computers, art materials and projector.
