N19.52b worth property destroyed by fire in 2024, Fire Service reveals

Lagos State government has revealed that property worth N19.52 billion were lost to fire incidents, while N117.12 billion worth of property were saved from being destroyed by fire in 2024.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed this, while providing details about the agency’s activities in 2024, during its 2025 staff engagement themed, mobilising workforce towards fire risk reduction and preparedness

She also said that 450 victims were rescued alive from fire incidents, while 91 persons were recovered dead from fire incidents.

Adeseye further said the agency 1952 emergency calls and 578 false calls. According to the fire service boss, of the 1952 emergency calls, fire calls were the highest with 1607 calls, followed by 172 salvage calls, 150 rescue calls, 15 collapsed building calls and 8 explosion calls.

She added that 7870 facilities were inspected for compliance, just as two new fire stations were commissioned during the year under review in Ikorodu and Satellite town, while four fire stations are under construction.

In her welcome address, Adeseye noted that the event provides the agency the opportunity to review its progress and identify areas for improvement as it continue working towards strengthening service delivery in safeguarding lives, properties and the environments.

“The theme for this year’s engagement, “Mobilising Workforce Towards Fire Risk Reduction and Preparedness”, underscores the critical role each of us plays in Fire prevention and safety.”

She noted that fire risk reduction and preparedness require the active participation and commitment of every individual in the society.

“As members, we are the backbone of any strata of the society we belong to, and Fire Safety is a shared responsibility that demands our dedication and commitment both in our workplaces and communities.

“This engagement is designed to upscale Lagos firefighters knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to identify and mitigate fire hazards, respond effectively during emergencies, and promote a culture of fire risk reduction and preparedness.

“We must also acknowledge the unwavering support of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu-led administration, which has prioritised the safety of Lagosians and empowered our agency. The recent signing of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Bill into Law is a major milestone that strengthens Fire Safety Governance and operational capacity.”
