Harmattan, characterised by its dry, dusty air, can leave the skin dull and dehydrated if not properly cared for. As the harmattan season unfolds, Consultant Physician and Dermatologist, Dr. Shakirat Gold-Olufadi, shares practical skincare tips to keep the skin healthy and radiant.
Gold-Olufadi explains that all skin types – oily, normal, combination or dry – require extra care during harmattan. While dry skin is more susceptible, maintaining skin health in this season doesn’t have to be expensive. Simple, consistent routines and the right products can work wonders.
She advises avoiding antiseptic soaps unless medically necessary, as these strip away the skin’s natural bacterial flora, which helps it maintain its balance. Aggressive scrubbing is another common mistake; opt for soft sponges instead. What may appear as “dirt” is often just dead skin from natural turnover. Vigorous scrubbing not only removes this layer but also strips the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
With these affordable and effective tips, you can maintain soft, nourished skin throughout the harmattan season, ensuring a healthy glow for all your festive celebrations.
