Make this summer vacation memorable for your kids
It’s another summer vacation, which is the longest holidays in the school calendar and ushers in another academic year. While your kids are taking a break from school work, there are other activities they can be engaged in and memorable places to visit this period.
For Jayne Augoye, founder, Fabmumng, a lifestyle and parenting resource person, engaging children in extra-curricular activities boost their ability to learn amd assimilate quickly. Adding that putting them through the rigorous school work during this period do not give their brains the time to rest and rejuvenate for the coming academic session.
According to Augoye, here are ways kids can relax and have educative fun during the hoildays.
Watch a film: It’s the summer break and cinemas always have discounted tickets for kids and even adults, so why not go out and see a movie as a family. Alternatively, you can stay back at home and see a movie on Netflix on terrestrial or cable TV. You can also invite other members of your family over for a movie night and everyone would definitely have fun without having to spend a dime.
Get Cooking: You can also look around your kitchen and whip up an interesting recipe. You don’t have to spend too much. You can bake a cake with your kids, prepare spring rolls or small chops together. After cooking you can decide to eat at home or go on a family picnic at a nice park or garden.
Visit a museum: The children will definitely love to visit local museums around you, which oftentimes aren’t too expensive. The Nigerian National Museum, Lagos, is located on Awolowo Road, Onikan, Lagos, and the Museum houses some notable collections of the country’s sculptures, arts, ethnographic, and archaeological displays. You will also find some historical statues and carvings and monuments here. This museum opens daily from 6:00 am – 6:00 pm.
. Jos Museum is located in the Jos Museum Complex very close to the Jos Zoo. There is also a pottery hall in the museum and a school of learning for Museum technicians and enthusiasts.
. National War Museum, Umuahia is located in Abia State, it is called a war museum. The museum opens from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and attracts an entrance fee of N200.
. National Museum, Benin City, this museum fully represents the depth and history of the Benin Empire and this will leave you in awe and gratitude. The museum is located on King’s Square, at the heart of the city.
. National Museum, Kaduna is located opposite the Emir of Zazzau’s palace along Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna. It houses the terracotta statues, bronzes and other ethnographic and archaeological artifacts too.
. Esie Museum, located in the Igbomina town of Kwara state, this museum was the first to be established in Nigeria. It has a contemporary gallery with a permanent exhibition titled “Indigenous Artworks as Indicators of Cultural harmony” and outside the museum lays a children’s playground.
. Gidan Makama, Kano, it was a 500-year-old palace in Kano before it was converted into a museum. It has a noteworthy collection of arts, crafts and items of historic interest to the Kano area. The museum is divided into 11 galleries, each with their own centre of focus.
. Kanta Museum is located in Argungu, Kebbi State Nigeria, adjacent to the main market. The museum is divided into 11 compartments, which boast of a notable collection of weapons like charms, spears, swords local guns, wood, stones, bows and arrows among others.
. National Museum of Colonial History is a notable museum located at 6 Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, Abia and was opened in 1985. You will find items like old Nigerian money and relics of the slave trade era.
. Owo museum is located in Owo, Ondo State Nigeria. The museum contains significant artifacts and ethnographic materials discovered in the Owo area, which was first excavated in 1969-1971 by Ekpo Eyo. The museum opens on weekdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Augoye whose platform empowers mums and ultimately enables them to effectively juggle it all, concluded that making such educative visits especially to a museum leaves indelible memories in the minds of our young children as it helps to form their thoughts and actions.
