Jail breaks: Over 3, 000 inmates still at large

•About 50,000 Awaiting Trial

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), has said that not less than 3, 000 inmates that escaped as a result of recent jail attacks are yet to be captured.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the agency, Francis Enobore, made this known at an interactive session with journalists at the weekend in Abuja.

He said so far, 452 inmates have been captured and more will be brought into custody. Enobore noted that the year 2021 has undoubtedly been very challenging due to the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and growing insecurity challenges whose spillover is the attack on custodial centres across the country.

He, however, said the agency had made progress in several areas such as the non record of any case of the pandemic in any of its correctional facility, the continuous training and enrollment of inmates in various graduate and doctoral degrees programmes and vocational trainings, improved court appearances and increased capacity of the NCoS in terms of more custodial centres and a general structural.

The spokesperson also said the service currently has a total of 68, 901 inmates in it’s custody across the country.

He said 19, 667 of those in custody are convicts while 49, 234 of them are on the awaiting trial list and this means that 71 percent of inmates are awaiting trial.
