The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) has condemned the recent lynching of some Nigerians in Uromi, Edo State in which tens of persons lost their lives under questionable circumstance.
In a statement issued by the Institute, the President and Chairman of Council, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd.), said that “such acts of violence and lawlessness have no place in our society and only serve to undermine the rule of law and perpetuate a culture of fear and intimidation.”
While calling for full investigation into the incident in order to fish out and bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book, Ayuba urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to prevent future occurrences of such barbaric acts. Reasoning that “there is a need to further ensure that our law enforcement agencies are adequately equipped and trained to respond effectively to incidents of mob violence.”
NIM President further stressed that “as a nation, we must continue to promote and encourage engagement of all stakeholders in dialogue and conflict resolution initiatives to prevent the escalation of disputes into violence.”
He reiterated that “the impact of such barbaric acts is far-reaching, both locally and globally. Locally, it can lead to a breakdown in law and order, displacement of communities, and a decline in economic activity. Globally, it can damage Nigeria’s reputation, deter investment, and undermine our international relationships.”
The statement concluded with the Institute calling on all stakeholders, including government, civil society, and community leaders, to work together to prevent future occurrences of mob violence and promote a culture of peace, tolerance, and respect for human rights.
