The Federal Government have secured the release of six Nigerian women after they were detained by Cape Verde authorities on false allegations of human trafficking.
Their release was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday after the six women departed the Island nation.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigerian diplomatic machinery in Guinea–Bissau engaged the Cape Verde authorities to facilitate the release of the women.
The six women, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had travelled to the Island for holidays, but were accused of being human traffickers, which was later proven to be false.
The MFA expressed gratitude to the Cape Verde authorities for its co-operation in facilitating the release of the six women, and reiterated its readiness to protect Nigerian nationals, especially outside the shores of the nation.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform you that the Nigerian nationals, ladies, who were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have left the country, too.,
“The Ministry engaged Cape Verde authorities via our Mission in Guinea-Bissau to secure their release. The six ladies travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday and were unfortunately detained on allegations of trafficking, which turned out to be false.” MFA said.
