Customs officials manhandle FAAN security personnel, injure four
A mild drama ensued yesterday at the Hajj Camp and Cargo Terminal of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, when officers of the Nigerian Customs & Excise Service, Airport Command, manhandled four security personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), inflicting serious injuries on them.
Trouble started when two Customs officials attempted to forcefully gain entry to the air side of the airport without identification, a breach of security regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and were prevented by FAAN’s Aviation Security officials (AVSEC).
The Customs officials resorted to beating the aviation security personnel in full public glare, leading to brief disruption of operations in the immediate vicinity.
Confirming the incident, FAAN General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Yakubu Dati, told The Guardian that the affected AVSEC personnel have been taken for treatment at the Aviation Clinic near the airport.
When contacted, Customs Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, said he was not aware of the incident.
The incident was the second time men of the Nigerian Customs at the International Airport have displayed such act. Customs officials had forcefully locked up an AVSEC officer and contractor for allegedly causing traffic gridlock. The customs men accused the construction firm of blocking the road leading to the Hajj Camp, where their office is situated; hence, the decision to detain them in a lock-up cell guarded by armed officers for almost 20 minutes.
