MTV has made a special statement about Nicki Minaj, it appears that Minaj will also be recognised at this year’s Video Music Awards.

It should come as no surprise that Minaj will get MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award because her legacy in rap is far from over and her impact and influence as a queen in hip hop are unrivalled.

In addition, Nicki Minaj will make her first appearance at the VMAs in 2018 and it will have been 11 years since she won her first award for Best Hip-Hop Video.

According to Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events, Paramount+, he said, “Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry. She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’.”

The Video Vanguard Award was not given out at the VMAs last year for the second consecutive year. Between 2004 and 2005, as well as again between 2007 and 2010, no one was given the honour. Between 2013 and 2019, the Vanguard Award, undoubtedly the show’s highest accolade, was given to Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, P!nk, Jennifer Lopez, and Missy Elliott.

Minaj will join previous Janet Jackson, Madonna, LL Cool J, and Missy Elliott recipients of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
