In a surprise appearance at the 2022 MTV VMAs, Johnny Depp cracks jokes saying that he needed the work as the Moonman.
Nearly three months after a verdict in his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard was rendered, the actor made a surprise n appearance at the 2022 MTV VMAs dressed as an astronaut.
The 59-year-old actor made a brief cameo appearance early in the programme, his visage digitally inserted into the helmet of a floating moon person.
“And you know what? I needed the work,” Depp told the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. He appeared again as the show returned from commercial, quipping, “Hey VMAs, let’s get back to the f—ing music, shall we?”
The appearance comes months after a seven-person jury, which primarily sided with the actor, found that Heard, even though she didn’t specifically identify Depp, defamed him in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence. Damages totalling more than $10 million were given to him. Heard, on the other hand, was granted $2 million when one of her three defamation countersuit claims was successful.
Heard’s motion for a mistrial was denied by Judge Penney Azcarate, and when Heard formally appealed the decision, Depp’s legal counsel said that they would also be contesting the decision in Heard’s countersuit.
Depp’s impending return to acting was made public earlier in August when WhyNotProductions and France Télévisions unveiled the first image of his King Louis XV in the historical drama, Jeanne du Barry. The film is directed by French actor and director Mawenn. The production started filming last month in several locales throughout France, notably Versailles and Paris.
According to a media source, the movie is based on the life of Jeanne du Barry, the last royal lover of the King of France. She was born into poverty but used her intelligence to climb the social ladder and eventually become Louis XV’s favourite companion.
Additionally, Depp will be directing the upcoming film Modigliani for the first time in over twenty years.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that the actor would co-produce with Barry Navidi and Al Pacino a movie about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. This is Depp’s second time serving as the director of a major motion picture; his first was 1997’s The Brave, in which he also acted with Marlon Brando.
Depp declared in a statement that the jury “given me my life back” and that the “best is yet to come” for him after the defamation trial’s verdict on June 1. Heard, on the other hand, described it as a “setback” for female activists.
The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey will host the live broadcast of the 2022 VMAs on Sunday night.
