Nigerian gospel reggae artiste Buchi Atuonwu has revealed how he left a cult group after a spiritual encounter that changed his life completely.

The Jesus Must Be Honoured singer shared the story during a recent interview on Black Flame.

According to the 60-year-old, he realised the cult wasn’t just a physical group but a spiritual trap after he gave his life to Christ.

“Jesus! I had a deeper understanding. Jesus showed me the meaning of the cult. He showed me it was not a physical association. You can’t bring a knife to a gun war. It was spiritual,” he said.

Buchi also shared a scary moment that marked the beginning of his escape from the group.

“We were singing and walking when someone spoke into my ears; you don’t belong here. I ignored the voice but I heard it for the second time. That was when my problems started, running from other cults, from the police, etc.”

Before switching to gospel music, Buchi said he was active in cult activities as a young man.

He said the voice he heard while marching with the group haunted him until he left everything behind.

After the encounter, he said he fully gave his life to Christ and turned to gospel music, where he now uses his voice to inspire others.

Buchi has since become one of Nigeria’s most respected gospel singers, known for songs like Mma Mma, It Is Well, and What A Life.

In December 2021, he marked 21 years since becoming born again, a moment he says gave his life true meaning.
