Award-winning Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has disclosed that she avoids signing upcoming artistes due to the challenges and responsibilities involved in managing them.

In a recent interview with Forbes Africa, the 45-year-old Afrobeats star explained that she doesn’t feel equipped to mentor and oversee other artistes under her label. Instead, she prefers to create opportunities differently.

“Everyone always says to me, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste, because artistes are stressful. I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up and my artist is trending for something else,” she remarked.

Tiwa Savage, who began her music career as a backup vocalist for artistes like George Michael and Mary J. Blige, gained prominence after participating in the UK edition of The X Factor and graduating from Berklee College of Music.

She returned to Nigeria in 2012 and signed with Mavin Records, where she contributed to the label’s compilation album Solar Plexus.

Reflecting on her strengths, Savage expressed her desire to establish a music school where aspiring musicians can hone their skills before signing with record labels that can support their careers.

“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you,” she added.

Throughout her career, Tiwa Savage has been involved in various youth empowerment projects and breast cancer screening initiatives across Nigeria.

She has also helped raise funds for organiaations building schools in her hometown.
