Stories That Made Our Week: All Happening For Nigerians In The Obodo Oyinbo

By Vanessa Walters 17 September 2017   |   5:00 am

It was all happening for Nigerians in the “obodo oyinbo”. Mo Abudu launched her new movie in Canada making internationals waves while Davido and Adebayo Oke-Lawal took over UK department store Selfridges with their new collaborative collection Davido x Orange – but you need the visa first! Ogenyi didn’t get it and missed out on a potentially lucrative signing to Birmingham City. Here are the stories that made our week…

Mo Abudu makes movie magic abroad

Good week for MA who celebrated her birthday with the premiere of another Ebonylife movie. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel in Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which is set in Lagos and London, stars Kenneth Okolie and Zainab Balogun.

Look like Rihanna

She has one of the most desired faces in the world but now Rihanna has given her fans a chance to copy her looks with the launch of her Fenty Beauty makeup range. With 40 foundation shades and an emphasis on darker shades, other brands scrambled to show diversity appreciation as well but fans were not having it, queueing for hours and devouring every bottle available. If we really face facts though (no pun intended), most fans are likely to be disappointed in their quest to look like the diva.

Onazi moving on

Nigerian footballer Ogenyi Onazi’s last ditch appeal was rejected by the FA who denied his work visa earlier this year. The visa, which would have allowed him to transfer to Birmingham City would have changed his life but due to Nigeria’s low world football ranking he did not qualify. Onazi, who plays for Turkish team Trabzonspor said he was positive nevertheless. Onazi also recently welcomed a new daughter.

If I tell you that I love your clothes

Wunderkind designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal teamed up with superstar Davido to collaborate on a clothing collection which launched at Selfridges in the UK last week. It was part of the famous department store’s Music Matters campaign and Style House Files also helped to arrange the collab. The clothing was inspired by Davido’s hit single IF, which was displayed on some of the clothes and featured T-shirts, tunics and bomber jackets.

How much?

Last weekend saw the culmination of the US Open where veteran Raphael Nadal and newcomer Sloane Stephans respectively claimed victory in style. For Raphael Nadal, his 16th grand slam was just business as usual but for 24-year-old Sloane Stephens winning and the almost $4 million paycheck (N1.5 billion) were a little more spectacular.
