Stories That Made Our Week: Davido Living La Vida Loca And Other Stories
Black is an eternal fashion statement and was recently was used as the colour of solidarity. Being a princess involves more than charity work, it also means no Instagram selfies and Twitter rants apparently. N500 million is no small feat for a concert and Davido is here to school you. It’s been a week of buzzing events and these are the stories that made our week.
Living la vida loca
Nigerian artists work hard and play harder. On the top of that list is none other than the omo baba olowo himself. After the triumph of his #30Billion concert last year, which broke social media and trended in the US; Davido made boast that the concert generated up to N500 million. Not sure if he has paid his tax but the artist just bought a 2018 Bentley Bentyaga Onyx Edition and is currently on vacation with some members of his crew in Dubai. What a way to start the new year!
Black for a cause
At the recently concluded Golden Globe Award ceremony, a good number of the celebrities in attendance were clad in black as they took a stand against sexual harassment and female neglect in Hollywood. From Kerry Washington to Viola Davis, the celebrities used social media as a tool prior to the event and made viral hashtags like #WhyIWearBlack, #MeToo, #TimesUp to push the movement. It’s certainly gearing momentum towards making the industry a fair ground for all players.
A lot of brands were called out last year for promoting racial slurs in their ad campaigns. This year H&M released an ad with a very young model in a green hoodie with the inscription ‘Coolest Monkey In The Jungle’. This ad has cost them their relationship with artists like The Weeknd and G Eazy. Social media, is also calling for the company’s head. Is this a marketing strategy and is the public falling prey for the oldest publicity trick in the book: there is no such thing as bad publicity? We’d never know.
Oprah for President
Hold your breath as Oprah might just make history in 2020. Social media lit up following Oprah’s moving speech at the 2018 Golden Globes Awards and many would love her to replace Donald Trump in the coming election year for the US. Although she has expressly stated she has no intentions of running for any office of any kind, there is nothing a little prayer cannot do.
While the rest of the world make new year resolutions that they’ve probably broken, Meghan Markle is bound to hers for some months. It seems that one of the requirements of becoming a part of the royal family includes deleting your social media accounts. She deleted her Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account in preparation for her wedding. According to the official statement by Kensington Palace, “As she has not used them for some time, she has taken the decision to close them”. Would she have a Princess Diaries moment? Time will tell.
