The Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Sen. Ken Eze, on Sunday insisted that the 10th Senate has performed credibly well in the discharge of their constitutional obligations in two years, more than the previous Senate put together.
In a media parley with journalists in Abakaliki, Sen. Eze said that none has passed the number of bills we have passed within two years, noting that the crop of Senators in the Senate is made of a collection of intellectuals who have sacrificed enough to move the country forward.
Eze maintained that members are reading, researching, and burning the candle every night, but you people may not know the enormity of the work that legislators do, stressing that it is not jamborees as you people think.
“Yes, this Senate is made of a collection of intellectuals, and you can’t even stand up to talk if you are not sure of yourself because you are being faced by the whole world. You are speaking,” Eze said.
“For you to even make any contribution, talk less of presenting a bill, you need to read and read and read and make a research, and come up with a bill. It’s not easy to make a law.”
“And that is why there’s a lot— even when you come up with the bill— there’s a lot of scrutiny to the bill. And most of the time, the bill will be killed if it is found not to serve the interest of the public. The National Assembly is doing an excellent job.
“By the time the tax bill will come out after assent by Mr. President, I believe every Nigerian will be happy with that bill because we have been able to analyze it, we have been able to drill, subject it to all sorts of tests, and remove those areas we feel may not go well with Nigerians, and add areas we think we can improve on it.”
Eze, who represents Ebonyi Central, maintained that their job is to make laws, checkmate the Executive through oversight, and ensure that funds appropriated are being judiciously utilized to the benefit of the masses whom they represent.
Sen. Eze further stated that the relationship between them and the Senate President is very cordial, stressing that the successes they have recorded in the last two years can be attributed to his sagacious leadership.
Ken said, “We have done very well, and if you listen to the Senate President’s speech during the June 12 anniversary, you will hear the number of bills we have been able to pass within two years and numbers that have been assented to by Mr. President.”
On their relationship with the Executive, Sen. Eze noted that the relationship is cordial and Mr. President has not breached any law, noting that he respects the separation of power.
“He is respecting the separation of power and following the Constitution of the Federal Republic and doing all what he is doing. We have not found him wanting in any place. In any areas we need to advise, we advise and he adheres to it.
“We need to contribute our quota by supporting the Executive to deliver on their mandate. So the National Assembly has done very well in terms of our constitutional duty. We have passed many bills.”
