LawThe Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Hon. Martins Okechukwu Azubuike has debunked the insinuations in some quarters that Abia State House of Assembly, last week, hurriedly approved the raising of N30 billion loans.

He said that due legislative process was followed by lawmakers in approving the request made, through a letter, by the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

The Speaker told journalists, Friday, that the lawmakers did not breach any parliamentary process in authorizing the state governor to access the loan from banks at prevailing interest rate, stressing that the Assembly was empowered by law to regulate its proceedings.

Azubuike stated that based on a letter from the Governor, seeking House endorsement of the loan, the Lawmakers assessed the needs of the state requiring urgent attention to which the said loan will be channeled ranging from the Dredging of the Aba River, Construction of Bridges across the three senatorial zones of the state, Construction and Rehabilitation of roads, building of three modern Hospitals across the three senatorial zones in Abia State, Construction of comprehensive Drainage system across the state, building of industrial clusters, and other necessary Development foundations.

According to him, the lawmakers consequently did the needful by analysing the matter in an executive session before coming to the plenary, to approve it.

He therefore commended members irrespective of their political parties, who looked beyond political consideration and supported the resolution. He described the Lawmakers as Ambassadors of change that Abians will appreciate for their patriotism.

In a related development, the Abia Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, on Friday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce the documents used during the state 2015 governorship polls in Abia for inspection by the APGA governorship candidate, Dr Alex Otti, whose election petition is being heard.
