The Adejimi Adeniji Foundation has concluded the grand finale of the MAEPiMS Challenge 2025 in Abuja, where Team_Epi_3 emerged winners, securing the top prize of ₦400,000.
The MAEPiMS Challenge — standing for Mathematical Modelling, Epidemiology, Machine Learning, and Social Indicators for Public Health Modelling and Solutions — brought together eight teams comprising 32 participants. These finalists, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, included final-year undergraduates, master’s, and doctoral students from across Nigeria. Each team was given 96 hours to develop and present mathematical models for COVID-19 transmission based on real-world data.
Team_Epi_3, consisting of Peter Attaigu, Abraham Ajeolu Oluwasegun, Divine Favour Obiezue, and their coach Seun Ale, impressed the judges with their analytical precision, innovative model structure, and actionable insights. In addition to their ₦400,000 cash prize, the team received mentorship and masterclasses valued at $500 from Scholarships Cafe, along with a sponsored personal website for their coach, courtesy of Hillary Consult.
Other participating teams were also recognised with cash prizes and certificates of recognition for both students and their coaches.
During the award ceremony, representatives of the Adejimi Adeniji Foundation highlighted the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and practical solutions to public health challenges. They announced that the top four teams have been invited to revise and submit their work for possible publication in reputable academic journals, opening avenues for academic authorship and international exposure.
Special recognition was given to Mrs Eniola Muyiwa-Oni, Dr Kayode Oshinubi, and Dr Emmanuel Dansu for their outstanding efforts in managing logistics and remotely coordinating activities to ensure the smooth running of the challenge.
The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing Africa’s next generation of mathematical modellers and public health researchers, with plans already underway for the next edition of the MAEPiMS Challenge.
