Anti-Fubara protesters stage protest in Rivers, support emergency rule

A women’s group staged a protest in Rivers on Monday to drum support for the emergency rule in the state.

This protest comes barely three days after another women’s group staged a demonstration to demand the reinstatement of the suspended governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara.

The women denied being paid and hired by political mercenaries to support emergency rule in the state.

The protest began as early as 7 am, with the women chanting songs and bearing placards.

Some of their placards read “Emergency rule is Constitutional”, “Rivers women voted for you, but you made us your slaves”, “Investigate Fubara’s bloated Contracts award”, “Say no to dictatorship” and “Rivers women need peace in our state”.

The protesters were led by former commissioner for Social Welfare, Inime Aguma, who is a loyalist of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Aguma was one of the cabinet members who resigned from their appointments when the crisis between Fubara and Wike intensified.

The protesters claimed that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers has brought calm and peace to the state.
Some residents have, however, described the protesters as shameful and a ‘disgrace’ to womanhood.

A resident, Emma Amadi, said it is a shame that protests have become an occupation in Rivers State, where women are paid N5,000 to march on the streets over what they know nothing about.

“How did we get to this point? he questioned.

“Protest is gradually becoming an occupation in Rivers State.”

Another resident noted that it was quite unfortunate that women were stooping low against their conscience.

“If I see my mum among these women, I will chase her back, but my mom can’t be seen doing such. Shameless women,” he said.
