Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Umeh Kalu, has assessed judgments delivered on election petitions filed before the state tribunal judges describing the verdicts as sound. He also commended the judges for dispensing justice dispassionately.

He, however, remarked that despite the integrity of the verdicts, petitioners and respondents who feel aggrieved or not satisfied with the judgments could legitimately contest them in higher courts — the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court — as applicable.

He decried allegations and criticisms by some petitioners, respondents and their political parties against some members of the tribunals accusing them of delivering judgments in favour of those alleged to have bribed the judges saying “by casting such aspersions against the judges, they have portrayed our state in bad light.”

Kalu, who spoke to journalists late Wednesday in Umuahia in reaction to allegations against the tribunal judges and some of their verdicts, urged Abians to be law-abiding and not be reckless in their reactions.

According to the Attorney General, there were 36 election petitions filed before the tribunals, which caused the setting up of more than one panel for National /State Election Petitions. He added that no political party won or lost in all the judgments delivered so far.
