Body seeks govt, public synergy to end incessant building collapse

Worried by the incessant building collapses in the country, the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) has staged a walk against arbitrary building failures.

The peaceful rally, tagged “Walk Against Building and Infrastructure Collapse,” passed through major streets of the state capital.

Speaking after the walk, the National Vice Chairman of NICE, Grace Amusan, alongside the State Chairman, Ismail Adeyemi, disclosed that all hands must be on deck to rise against the menace of building collapse in the country.

The duo appealed to the public to engage professional civil engineers in the process of building their homes, noting that people tend to opt for quacks instead of professionals in the name of cutting costs.

The engineers stated that it was imperative for people to engage professionals to avert casualties associated with building collapses, emphasizing that their services are cheaper and safer.

He said, “The essence of today’s walk is to say no to quackery and to encourage the general public to engage professional civil engineers. Many think it is costly, but the cost of having collapsed structures is huge and enormous. Loss of lives and properties cannot be quantified. When people engage professional civil engineers, it is cheaper and safer.

“It is important to engage professional civil engineers in the current times to ensure there are no casualties during and after construction. We are saying no to the collapse of infrastructure and buildings.”

The institute explained that the walk was to say no to incessant building collapses, urging the public to patronize professionals when constructing buildings.

They further stressed that the government, at all levels, must mandate people to engage professionals in erecting any structure within their domain.
