The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, and other stakeholders have attributed the emergence of bad leaders to excessive monetisation of the political space, harping on the import of application of Christian values and meritocracy in political leadership.

Okafor said this while delivering his remarks as Keynote Speaker at the maiden public lecture, matriculation of five students and commissioning of 34 new evangelisers of the Fides School of Theology and Evangelisation (FSTE), St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, Anambra State, at the weekend.

While observing that the matriculants and new evangelisers were being equipped for human, spiritual, theological and pastoral formations, the Catholic bishop said the electorate’s demand for money before supporting candidates for political offices is a development, which has enthroned opportunists who are not the best leadership materials, calling for reversal of the ugly trend.

Welcoming the participants, the Director of the School, Fr. Celestine Muonwe, lamented that the sad reality and consequences of monetising the political process is that many young people, with good vision to serve the society, are not able to have the chance to do so, unless they seek the support of moneybags.
