The Centre for Digital Humanities, University of Lagos (CEDHUL), has launched the 1st Lagos Spring School in Digital Entrepreneurship & Digital Cultures (LSSDEDC-2025) with a view to raising and equipping a new generation of Tech-skilled Workforce and Drive the Growth of Nigeria’s Digital economy through leveraging Town and Gown Synergy.
Themed: “Digital Technology and Digital Entrepreneurship as Catalyst for Innovation, Socio-Cultural Transformation and Economic Empowerment”, the opening ceremony of the 6-day event took place at Aderinokun Memorial Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos.
Convener and Director, CEDHUL, Prof. ‘Tunde Ope-Davies, said the need to identify skills gap in the humanities gave birth to the 1st Lagos Spring School in Digital Entrepreneurship & Digital Cultures.
He said the CEDHUL would definitely bridge the digital skills gap among those in humanities which of course was not built into the curriculum of the Arts and Humanities, adding that the world currently requires tech. skills.
“CEDHUL is a platform created for raising and equipping 21st century’s future business leaders with digital skills.
“Therefore, Lagos Spring School will no doubt assist university students, fresh graduates and professionals in humanities that attend the school to deepen their digital skills,” he assured.
Ope-Davies further remarked that aside the Lagos Spring School empowering students and professionals with skills to become job creators instead of looking for jobs, the initiative would go a long way to synergizing those in the academia as well as experts in industries to intersect and interact towards producing and equipping graduates with academic and practical knowledge so that they can be relevant in a digital economy.
The host, Dean of Arts, Prof. Mudasiru Ilupeju, said the Faculty of Arts has began to position itself as faculty of first choice in Unilag by doing things beyond expectations as no one would have expected that it would delve into digitalization, adding that the faculty would continue to shock the world.
Ilupeju drew attention to the fact that the faculty remains the first of its kind to initiate digital school and has created a niche for itself to be the first faculty to transmit its results digitally of which the model is being used today.
He looked forward to creative arts soon becoming a faculty where it will be displaying creativity and dramatizing digitally.
Chief Host, Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services, Prof. Foluso Ebun Afolabi Lesi, described the maiden Lagos Spring School as a significant milestone in the University’s collective pursuit of knowledge, innovation and progress which UNILAG will leverage on to foster a culture of digital entrepreneurship.
She emphasized her administration’s deep commitment to pitch her tent with the introduction of Lagos Spring School which aligns perfectly with the University’s vision.
“It is very important our students, undergraduates, post graduates, scholars, researchers across the various disciplines and in fact, everyone be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to navigate and thrive in this dynamic era of technology.
“We firmly believe that technology is not just a tool but rather a catalyst for innovation and development,” she said.
Keynote speaker, Managing Director/Chief Executive, New Horizons Limited and Board member, CEDHUL, Mr. Tim Akano, said it has become imperative for Nigeria to take the idea of digital humanities seriously as it would create jobs for Nigerians which would limit importations that is shrinking our economy and the nation would experience a new dawn.
“Our universities should begin to teach their students critical skills like problem solving and communication to continue to thrive and remain relevant.
“There are lots of opportunities for our students to tap who should be made positive thinkers,” he said.
