Christmas: Adamawa workers besiege banks to withdraw December salaries


BVN-bank-pixGovernment workers in Adamawa have besieged banks in Yola to withdraw their December salaries for Christmas shopping.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported long queues in the banks and ATM points across the town.

A cross section of the workers, who spoke to NAN, lauded the state government for “speedy” payment of the December salaries to enable them prepare in good time for the Yuletide.

They said that the payment of December salaries on Dec. 16 was the first of it kind in the state.

” I was surprised when I got this month salary alert on Wednesday; this is a commendable development.

“It will help many to prepare for the Yuletide ahead of the time,” Mr Joseph Abraham, a worker, said.

Other workers like Veronica Michael, Musa Ibrahim, Titus Zira and Jessica Buba also lauded the development, which they said, came as a big relief.

“It’s a good surprise when I received the alert; it’s really a good one from the government,” Michael said.

Michael urged government to sustain the tempo by ensuring prompt payment of all salaries as a way to boost workers’ morale.

Meanwhile, workers in local governments have also urged government to extend the gesture to them.

“We are yet to see our alerts at the local government level.

“We urge the state government to intervene and ensure council workers including teachers get their salary alerts before Christmas,” Dauda Gombi said.
