Barely a week to Christmas celebration, the prices of perishable items have risen in markets in Kaduna, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

A market survey conducted by NAN on Friday in Kaduna revealed that the prices of perishable items like tomato, onions and pepper had risen by between 25 per cent and 30 per cent.

A basket of tomato which sold for N6, 000 few months ago, had gone up to about N8, 500, while a bag of onions was sold for N26,000 as against N15,000.

A bag of hot and sweet pepper which sold for N7, 000 and N6, 000 respectively are now being sold for as much as N10,000 and N7,900 respectively at Kaduna Central market.

The survey however showed that the prices of foodstuff, including rice, maize, guinea-corn and others did not record significant increase.

A cross section of dealers in perishable items and foodstuff, who spoke with NAN, attributed the price increase to the persistent scarcity of fuel and the multiplier effect on transportation.

They said that they paid more to transport their perishables from the hinterland to the cities.

They however contended that the hike in prices had not deterred consumers from patronising the items ahead of the Christmas celebration.

One of the dealers, Sulaiman Muhammed told NAN that the prices of perishables would continue to rise as long as there was scarcity of fuel.

On his part, Ali Yusuf another dealer said that the price hike of perishable items was not a surprise as the yuletide approaches.
