Court nullifies Obasa’s removal as Lagos Assembly Speaker

The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the State House of Assembly illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya, who delivered the ruling on Wednesday, also voided all proceedings and resolutions of the Assembly held on January 13, 2025 — the day Obasa was removed and Mojisola Meranda was installed as the new Speaker.

Obasa approached the court to challenge his removal, describing it as a violation of the House’s internal procedures and constitutional provisions.

The court ruled in his favour, stressing that due process was not followed in the impeachment and that the actions taken during the controversial session were invalid.

The court also set aside all other resolutions and decisions made from the controversial sitting of Jan. 13 and awarded N500,000 to mr Obasa as damages.

This judgment effectively reinstated Obasa as Speaker and nullifies Meranda’s brief tenure.
