THE Delta State Government has refuted the reported outbreak of cholera in some parts of the state.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has assented to the amended state’s Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) bill.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Sunday Otobo told newsmen that there was nothing of such, noting though that there were incidents of stooling and vomiting in Aladja, Udu Local Council of the state.

He explained that of the various samples taken to Lagos for testing, none had indicated the epidemic, saying, “there is no confirmed outbreak of cholera in Delta State as l speak to you. In some communities, to be specific in Aladja, there were incidents of vomiting and stooling that were reported and as a Ministry, we have done a lot of work. Samples have been collected and sent to Lagos for testing but no case of cholera has been confirmed in that community,” he stressed.

Otobo said the governor had directed health officers in the 25 councils of the state to be proactive in detecting and tackling any outbreak of diseases in all communities.

The permanent secretary disclosed that government had taken measures to sensitise the people on the need to keep their environment clean and live healthily.

“ The Ministry of Environment is also going to mobilise to Aladja to make sure that environmental policies that will not endanger the health of the people are put in place, so that everybody in the community maintains a clean environment and also find a way of proper disposal of faeces,” Otobo stated.

Okowa, while signing the legislation into law in the presence of the Speaker, Monday Igbuya and his deputy, Friday Osanebi and other principal officers of the legislature as well as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Festus Ovie Agas; said the interventionist agency would be structured to impact positively on the lives of the people in terms of infrastructural development, social services and economic services.
He commended the lawmakers for their proactive approach to law-making, urging them to sustain the vibrancy and collaborate with the executive arm towards impacting more positively on the lives of the people.

“It is our hope that despite the challenges of the moment, we will stay focused in bringing prosperity to our people, not only in ensuring a healthy people but in the economy of the family and the development of different sectors of our state,” Okowa said.
