The Senior Special Adviser to the African Development Bank Group President on
Industrialisation, Prof. Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, has advocated the prioritisation of leadership that emphasises integrity, inclusivity, and accountability.

Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, who delivered a lecture at the Acquinas College Old Students Association Convention in Akure, Ondo State, on “Leadership and Nigeria’s Development,” said Nigeria needs leaders who inspire hope and mobilise the populace towards a common vision of progress and prosperity.

He urged the youth not to abandon their country but strive and fight for this prophetic dawn of Life Abundant for All.

“The path to Nigeria's development is fraught with challenges, but it is not insurmountable.

“The role of leadership is pivotal in shaping the nation’s future. Let us collectively champion the cause of good leadership in Nigeria, recognising that the future of this
great nation lies in our hands,” he said.

The don, who doubles as a professorial fellow at United Nations University, The Netherlands, said corruption remains one of Nigeria’s most significant impediments to
development as it diverts resources meant for public welfare and erodes trust in institutions.

He noted that from the pre-colonial era through Independence and into the present day, the country had experienced various forms of governance, which have left an indelible mark on the nation’s development, adding that the quest for good governance has been a persistent challenge, often hindered by corruption and a lack of vision among leaders.

Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, who stressed that visionary leadership is essential for navigating Nigeria’s complex landscape, said that leaders must articulate a clear and compelling vision for the future, one that resonates with the aspirations of the Nigerian people and addresses the needs of all demographics — youths, women, and marginalised communities.

According to him, insecurity, manifested through terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts, has stifled economic growth and development.

“A committed leadership must prioritise transparency, accountability, national security, engaging communities and implementing effective policies to restore peace.

“Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil exports has left its economy vulnerable to global price fluctuations. Leaders must promote diversification by investing in agriculture,
technology, and other sectors to create sustainable growth and job opportunities,” he
added.
