EEDC laments meters’ cloning as consumers complain of poor services




EVEN as electricity consumers in Anambra State are complaining of poor services, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) management weekend disclosed that the supply of mew meters were being delayed because some have been found to be compromised.

Consumers in major cities of Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi, Ogidi, Ekwulobia and Nkpor said poor services have persisted even in the face of assurances by the Transmission Company of Nigeria that generation and transmission has significantly improved nationwide.

However, EEDC alleged that there are many illegal meters in circulation and have been cloned. The electricity company revealed that a study has been commissioned to eliminate the cloning of the meters.

Persisting consumers’ woes was the highlight at the weekend during an advocacy visit to the EEDC by the Anambra State Civil Society/Media network.
The visit, which was organized by the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), Onitsha in partnership with the Christian Aid and the Department for International Development (DfID) under the “voice and accountability project (V2P) involving 25 media organizations, 6 civil society organization and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in Anambra state availed them opportunity to interact and appreciate the operations of the electricity distribution company.

The purpose, according to the Executive Director of JDPC, Reverend Father Edwin Udoye was to share the report on standards of electricity service to consumers in Anambra state, understand EEDC service procedure, regarding complaints mechanisms that will guarantee effective service provider and users relationship, to understand the basis for bill estimation and other service charges, etc.
