Ninety-three suspected internet fraudsters have been arrested following a raid by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 launched the operation early yesterday morning, during a pool party in the premises of the library, confiscating 18 vehicles, mobile phones, and other valuables from the suspected cyber scammers.
The anti-graft agency confirmed the operation in a terse statement, but withheld the name and location of the hotel, saying: “They were arrested yesterday in a sting operation in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following intelligence about their suspected involvement in internet crimes.
“They will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded.” The EFCC said it recovered six posh cars, 89 mobile phones, laptops and several incriminating documents from the suspects. A viral video of the Sunday raid at the Obasanjo Library showed youths scampering to safety as the sound of gunshots filled the air.
MEANWHILE, the management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library has accused the EFCC of invading its premises and violating the rights of guests during a private event yesterday.
Reacting to the incident, the OOPL management, in a statement made available by its Director, Vitalis Ortese, described the incident as a clear case of invasion of private property, infringement of corporate rights, and a blatant violation of the rights of the people who gathered for the event.
The management alleged that more than 50 armed men, claiming to be EFCC operatives and led by an individual identified as “Olapade”, stormed the amusement section of the complex without presenting a warrant.
According to the statement, shots were fired, causing panic and injuries as guests fled the scene.
“This gangster-like action caused terror among residents and guests,” the statement added, stating that the event had been publicly advertised days before.
The management vowed to escalate the matter to the EFCC leadership, the police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), demanding an official explanation and apology. It also warned that failure to address the grievances could lead to legal action and calls for sanctions against those responsible.
