Fear in Rivers community as cultists murder ex-youth leader

Tragedy struck in Odhiaje community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, when suspected cultists loyal to the late cult leader, David Gift aka 2Baba, killed a former Youth leader, Godspower Uwhetu.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, with eyewitnesses reporting that about five cultists, led by a man named Sam, invaded Uwhetu’s house around 1:00 am, dragged him out, and shot him dead in front of his home.

According to Hector Chinem, a former Public Relations Officer of Igbu Akoh Youth Congress, the motive behind the murder dates back to a previous altercation between Uwhetu and Sam’s mother.

The altercation led to Uwhetu going into hiding, but the cultists eventually tracked him down. Ekeakita stated that Uwhetu had predicted his own demise, telling friends that if anything happened to him, Sam should be held responsible.

He noted that the Odhiaje community is gripped with fear, with residents reporting frequent gunshots and vandalism in nearby areas.

He noted that last week, properties were damaged, and solar lights were vandalized in the Odieke-Akoh community. Ekeakita is calling on the authorities to take immediate action to prevent further bloodshed.

He explained: “This morning we woke up to hear that a former Youth leader of Odhiaje by name Godspower Uwhetu was killed by one Sam.

“Earlier before the incident, the mother of Sam held Uwhetu in his clothes, accusing him(Uwhetu) of calling soldiers to raid the house of his Son(Sam) that her son, Sam is innocent.

“We are calling on the Sole Administrator and also the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Air Force, the IGP, and Army residing in Ahoada to swing into action before something gets out of hand.

“This is how it started before my people started crying and innocent people dying daily.

“So, we are calling on the security network in Ahoada to beef up security. We are calling on the Police, JTF, and the LGA Administrator to fish the boys out who do not want to give peace a chance in Ekpeye land.”

As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command had not responded to inquiries about the incident.
