Fire guts Imo Water Board

Offa Markets fireFire Wednesday engulfed parts of the Imo State Water Board on Okigwe Road, Owerri, the state capital, and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The board, alongside other state-owned agencies, was recently concessioned by government, following governor Rochas Okorocha’s complaint that it was not profitable enough to match workers’ salaries and other funds expended on its maintenance.

The inferno was said to have started late afternoon from a big power-generating set, causing destruction of property worth millions of naira.
Principal of the nearby Imo Girls College, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Okwara had drawn the attention of fire fighters to the incident. The fire was said to have extended to neighbouring FSP School, Ugwuorji and other buildings.

Some of the frightened students have fled the school area.
