Danbatta Seeks Institutional Change To Transform Landscape

The African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) conference has ended in Abuja with a call to African leaders to ensure that the, “continent is connected with a free internet that is inclusive, safe and secure for all.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has advocated for institutional changes to transform the African digital landscape.

In a communique issued at the end of its 2023 conference in Abuja, AfIGF urged African Governments to create an enabling environment for digital economy to become pervasive and thrive across the region by reducing taxation on connectivity.

The forum observed that Africa has experienced significant growth in internet penetration since the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that African States, the African Union and regional organisations must ensure policy interoperability to enhance digital cooperation and digitise Africa.

According to the forum, Africa through the lens of the Internet Governance Forum, needs to apply and arrive at shared norms, rules and decision-making procedures that impact the evolution and utilisation of the internet.

“AfIGF is a unique platform for exchange of ideas and collaboration that will contribute to the internet we want and a means to empower all Africans,” the communiqué read.

According to AfIGF, African governments should have strong political will that shapes the digital landscape, noting that this is critical to achieving a safe, innovative and sustainable digital ecosystem.

“Technology is a double-edged sword, hence the need for IGF stakeholders’ preparedness to address the risk posture and its impact. African growth lies within and in the safe sharing of data and its innovation,” the forum added.

Danbatta, in his closing remarks, stressed the need for Africa to make the 5G network pervasive.  He observed that Africa needs to introduce institutional changes where necessary and also put in place the right communication infrastructure and vibrant internet platforms.

Danbatta stated that the Federal Government has established digital parks across the country to drive innovations.
