French Embassy urges rethink of plastic value chain

The French Embassy in Nigeria has recommended the reevaluation of the entire plastic value chain within the country. They emphasize that effective action is needed at every stage, from reducing plastic production and redesigning packaging to enhancing waste collection systems and fostering responsible consumption habits.

Recognizing that plastic pollution begins in urban areas—homes, markets, and cities—rather than solely at sea, the Embassy highlights the crucial role of effective waste management and infrastructure. They describe a concerning cycle where waste travels from land to rivers and ultimately to the oceans.

In alignment with this global movement, the French Embassy is set to host 11 initiatives throughout June, partnering with civil society organisations across six Nigerian states.

These activities, according to the Embassy, will encompass workshops, innovative plastic-to-art projects, and screenings followed by discussions, exemplifying a commitment to community engagement.

Deputy Ambassador Mr. Jean-Francois Hasperue made these known during the French Institute’s breakfast debate in honour of World Environment Day 2025, themed “From the Lagos Lagoon to the Côte d’Azur in Nice: A Shared Responsibility in the Face of Plastic Pollution?”

He also announced the launch of the FRENCH EMBASSY FUND PROJECT, dedicated to Plastic Waste Management in Nigerian CAMPUSES.

This initiative aims to support innovative solutions for a healthier environment, particularly within the educational sector, where plastic waste can have significant impacts.

Mr. Hasperue further noted that the Embassy, in collaboration with NNPC and TOTAL Energies, is organizing a Prize Remittance Ceremony following the breakfast debate.

“France is excited to host the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice from June 9 to 13, 2025. We recognize that international partnerships are vital for collaborative efforts in science, education, and technology to effectively combat marine pollution.

The upcoming UN Ocean Conference presents a crucial opportunity for nations to reaffirm their commitments, spur innovation, and enhance collective action under the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on Life Below Water.

“The French Embassy in Nigeria is also launching the Plastic Free Awareness initiative, centred around promoting plastic recycling and transformation within 11 partnered universities, furthering their dedication to addressing plastic pollution,” he concluded.
