The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun Command, has advised motorists in the state against any form of route violations and the use of vehicles with unregistered number plates.
The state Sector Commander, Mr Leye Adegboyega, gave the advice on Monday in Osogbo on the sidelines of a one-day sensitisation rally held across some motor parks.
The sensitisation campaign is part of activities to commemorate the 8th Global Road Safety Week held annually.
Adegboyega said recent observations in the state revealed a high proliferation of unregistered vehicles, particularly cars and motorcycles.
He said that most vehicles bear dealers’ number plates, which were mostly foreign numbers and driven about daily by motorists, adding that such practice was against the corps’ rules.
“Car dealers contribute greatly to this abnormality by either moving around with such unregistered vehicles affixed with dealers’ plates, or they sell vehicles with dealer number plates and stickers,” Adegboyega said.
“The buyers used these vehicles for indefinite lengths of time without properly registering such vehicles as required by law.”
He noted that the consequence of the use of unregistered vehicles was a loss of revenue to the government.
“The revenue being lost by the Osun Government as a result of the use of unregistered vehicles is unquantifiable.
“Such revenue would have helped the government in its responsibility of providing good roads for residents, particularly now that we have an unprecedentedly high level of road construction being undertaken in the state,” he said.
“It is therefore not far-fetched to conclude that this development is depriving the government of good revenue that would have been channeled to the ongoing road projects.”
Speaking on route violations, the sector commander warned against one-way route violations by motorcycles or vehicles, adding that it had cost the lives of many innocent souls in the state.
He warned that the command would not hesitate to deal with any traffic offenders when apprehended by the corps.
Adegboyega called for the collective responsibilities of transport stakeholders in the state to ensure the safety of the lives and properties of innocent civilians.
