Govt reinstates Tambuwal’s security details
President Goodluck Jonathan has reinstated the security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
A statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Speaker, Malam Imam Imam, yesterday said: “The policemen attached to the Speaker resumed duties a few days after men of the Department of State Security (DSS) returned to their duty posts.
“As we have always maintained, it is the duty of the state to provide special security for certain public office holders, of which the Speaker of the House of Representatives is one.
“We thank all Nigerians who voiced their opinion on the withdrawal, and the subsequent reinstatement of the security personnel.”
The withdrawal of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s security details in October 2014 allegedly on the orders of President Jonathan because of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was greeted with criticism by leading members of the House of Representatives as well as other Nigerians.
Tambuwal defected to the opposition party after his eight years membership of the Peoples Democratic Party. He attributed his defection to the crisis in the PDP in his Sokoto State.
Tambuwal was billed to travel to Makurdi, Benue State to attend the burial of the father of a PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Mr. Harris Ogbole, when the security details were withdrawn in the morning, a development which stalled the trip.
