Group demands suspension of Cross River superhighway project
The Climate Transformation and Energy Remediation Society (CLIMATTERS) has demanded that the issuance of Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and certificate to Cross River State Government be suspended and kept on hold, until proponent of the superhighway project complies with demands specified in the 23 conditions issued by Federal Ministry of Environment.
Speaking, yesterday in Abuja, President, CLIMATTERS, Smart Chukwuma Amaefula said ongoing campaigns by different organisations against the highway stopped the Ministry of Environment from giving full approval.
Amaefula explained that the 23 conditions for provisional Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) given in June 2017 only confirmed that the Federal Ministry of Environment is not oblivious of ulterior intentions of the state government.
He said: “Participating CSOs must stand as a united force to call on Federal Ministry of Environment to resist every pressure to give EIA approval to the project. It is clear the manner in which the highway is being pursued is constitutionally out of place and makes little or no economic sense.
