Gunmen kill CRUTECH’s chief architect in Calabar
The Chief Architect of Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTCH), Bassey Ekpenyong, was on Thursday night killed by gunmen in Calabar, the state capital.
Ekpenyong, who was in the Department of Works and Physical Planning, was reportedly ambushed by a six-man gang suspected to be assassins close to his home as he arrived in company of his wife.
An eyewitness said the suspected assassins had arrived in a bus and parked close to the home of Ekpenyong, who was also a former secretary of Calabar South Council, while waiting for the victim.
According to eyewitness: “As he arrived his home at Airport Road, Anantigha area of Calabar South, the gunmen came out from the bus, shot and killed him on the spot.
“They also snatched the phone of his wife before they escaped.”
When contacted, the state Police Command Public Relations Office, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, stating that Ekpenyong and his wife were coming from church when the incident happened
She added: “No arrest has been made. We are investigating the incident. However, we had a breakthrough this morning. We arrested two robbery suspects with a locally-made pistol in Calabar South. They are currently in our custody.
“We are waiting for the DPO of Efut to transfer the case to State CID.”
