How End Hunger Humanitarian Initiative is combating Nigeria’s food crisis

On April 22, 2025, Dr. Emem Alban, the founder of the End Hunger Humanitarian Initiative (EHHI), led a significant outreach program named “Feed One Million Kids.” This initiative aims to combat food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable populations in Nigeria. The team visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp located in Area 1, Durumi, Abuja, where they conducted a food distribution and a nutritional education workshop.

Nigeria, as the most populous nation in Africa and the sixth globally, faces a severe food crisis. With a staggering population of over 220 million, approximately 11 million Nigerians live in food insecurity, struggling below the poverty line. The ongoing conflict in the North-East has displaced more than 2.2 million individuals, exacerbating the situation. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), the malnutrition crisis in Nigeria is dire, affecting 5.4 million children aged 0-59 months and 787,000 pregnant or breastfeeding women and girls who are all facing acute malnutrition.

In response to this alarming situation, Dr. Alban directed her team to the largest IDP camp in Abuja. Upon arrival, she was briefed by the camp leader, Mr. Iddrisu Ibrahim Halilu, affectionately known as “Baba IDP.” The conditions faced by the IDPs were heart-wrenching; many children were suffering from malnutrition, and the camp lacked functional healthcare facilities. The EHHI team provided essential food assistance and educated the community on nutrition, aiming to empower them with knowledge to improve their health and wellbeing.

The “Feed One Million Kids” initiative is more than just a food distribution program; it is a commitment to addressing the root causes of hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria. By focusing on both immediate relief and long-term solutions, EHHI aims to create a sustainable impact in the lives of the most vulnerable populations. Dr. Emem Alban’s leadership and dedication to this cause exemplify the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat hunger and ensure that every child has access to nutritious food. Through initiatives like these, there is hope for a brighter future for millions of children in Nigeria.
