The Special Adviser and Director-General, Performance and Project Implementation Unit, Office of the Governor of Ondo State, Babajide Akeredolu, said he has proved critics who doubted his capacity to contribute to the development of Ondo State wrong.

Ondo State governor Rotimi Akeredolu appointed Babajide, his son to office in November 2021 amid criticisms from political opponents, accusing the former of making the government house a family inheritance.

Speaking to journalists one year after his appointment, Babajide said he has justified the opportunity given to him by the Ondo State Government with landmark achievements.“Power is never something that gingers the Akeredolu family. I’m not looking for that (governor’s seat), but I’m just looking for opportunities to make young people thrive.

“I have never thought of being a governor. That thing is stressful and I don’t want to go through it. People that are build for that, I wish them well.”

“The records are there to prove my performance and that of my team since we got into office a little over a year ago. Those who criticised my appointment are no longer speaking because they have seen that competence and capacity brought me here in the first place and nothing else,” Babajide said.

He said the plans and programmes of Ondo State supervised by his office had received significant growth and contributed to the overall developmental goals of the state government.

On future plans after public service, Akeredolu said he intends to continue growing and contribute to building capacity of younger people.

He, however, ruled out claims by critics that he plans to run for the office of Ondo State governor soon.

“I don’t have any plan to run for office. It is interesting people speculate this, but I have multiple pathways to success. I don’t need to stay in government to be successful.

“I have never thought of being a governor. That thing is stressful and I don’t want to go through it. People that are built for that, I wish them well.

“Power is never something that gingers the Akeredolu family. I’m not looking for that (governor’s seat), but I’m just looking for opportunities to make young people thrive.

“There are multiple cards to success for me. I am lucky I have a strong surname with a lot of options before me. So, I really don’t bother about what’s coming next, but I just focus on the present and how I can help the younger generations.”

Akeredolu noted that he believes that public office should be about service to the people and leaving an enduring legacy.
