In an industry traditionally dominated by men, one name stands tall. That entity is Ibi-Ada Itotoi who has broken barriers, shattered stereotypes, and risen to the top as a symbol of excellence, resilience, and innovation.

Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most influential figures in the Nigeria oil and gas sector is nothing short of extraordinary. Ibi-Ada’s career of excellence is laden with over 19 years of experience.

She has continuously demonstrated a deep understanding of the complex energy landscape. As Managing Director, Seplat East, with overview on the operations of OML53 and providing oversight for the oil firm’s interests in OML56, she oversees a complex structure hinged on delivering output in crude oil and condensate deliverables.

As an amazon, Ibi-Ada has overseen transformative projects that have not only enhanced production and sustainability, but also set new benchmarks for the industry. Under her leadership, Seplat Energy has grown into a powerhouse, contributing significantly to energy security in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Having joined the company in 2013; her career trajectory has traversed both operational and functional roles, most recently as Asset Manager West, Chief Reservoir Engineer Seplat and General Manager, Subsurface. Prior to joining Seplat Energy, Ibi-Ada worked for the Anglo Dutch energy giants, Shell Nigeria in both onshore and deep-water reservoir engineering roles.

As a champion of innovation and sustainability, in an era where the energy sector is grappling with the dual challenge of meeting growing energy demands while addressing environmental concerns, Ibi-Ada has stood at the forefront of sustainable practices.

She has spearheaded initiatives that have integrated cutting-edge technology and innovation into operations, ensuring that oil and gas production becomes more efficient, safer, and environmentally responsible.

Her forward-thinking approach is paving the way for a more sustainable future, as she continues to champion the importance of transitioning toward renewable energy sources while optimizing traditional energy practices.

With a meticulously coy outlook, Ibi-Ada is a role model for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Perhaps her most profound impact is her role as a mentor and advocate for women in STEM, especially in the oil and gas sector. Ibi-Ada has long been a vocal proponent of gender diversity, believing that the energy sector can only reach its full potential by embracing the talents of both men and women.

A consummate technical professional with experience in both operations and studies, she has led technical and integrated teams in areas such as field development planning, definition and execution, asset business and strategy planning (including budget and performance), annual reserves certifications, subsurface assurance processes and supply chain process optimisation.

In addition to these feats, she has frequently served as technical lead for acquisition evaluations across board. She has not only led by example but has also invested time and resources into nurturing the next generation of female engineers and leaders.

Through mentorship programs, scholarships, leadership initiatives, she has inspired countless women to pursue careers in energy, shattering glass ceilings and building a more inclusive industry. As one of the few women to reach the top ranks of Nigeria’s energy sector, Ibi-Ada is an icon of empowerment for women in the industry.

She has been a tireless advocate for gender diversity, championing the cause of equal representation and opportunities for women in energy. She believes in the power of mentorship and has mentored countless young women, encouraging them to pursue careers in engineering, energy, and leadership roles.

In addition, her legacy of leadership cannot be understated. As an exceptional leader, Ibi-Ada has always been known for her vision, strategic thinking, and ability to inspire those around her.

Her colleagues, employees, and peers describe her as a person of integrity, someone who makes tough decisions with compassion and foresight. Her legacy will be one of innovation, inclusivity, and unparalleled commitment to the advancement of the energy sector.

Under her guidance, Seplat East has spearheaded projects that have not only boosted Nigeria’s energy capacity but also contributed significantly to the economic and infrastructural development of the country.

Her deep knowledge of energy dynamics, combined with her strategic vision, has helped her navigate some of the most complex challenges in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. Her contributions have been instrumental in enhancing energy security and ensuring that Nigeria continues to stand tall as an energy giant in Africa.

In the vast and ever-evolving landscape of Nigeria’s energy sector, Ibi-Ada’s name stands out as a beacon of resilience, innovation, and leadership. Her journey from the early days of her career to becoming one of the most respected figures in the energy industry is an inspiring story of determination, breaking barriers, and reshaping the future of energy in Nigeria and beyond.

Ibi-Ada’s educational background was shaped in the precincts of renowned first generation fortress of academic and intellectual exposition, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she bagged the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Chemical Engineering, and Master of Science (MSc) in Process Technology from the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

Her well-grounded academic DNA was from her parents who were senior civil servants in ABU, and it’s visible for all and sundry to witness in public domain these unique traits.

A member of the leading energy industry umbrella, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), she has published five SPE technical papers in subjects such as Experimental Design, Field Development Planning, and Produced Water Disposal.

It’s not farfetched to acknowledge such a trailblazer with an unassuming outlook; she allows her work to do the talking while delivering on organisational KPIs via human capital. Her leadership, vision, and dedication continue to inspire countless individuals across the globe.

As the future beckons, her contributions will serve as a foundation for even greater innovation and success in the years to come. Her personal journey is a testament to the fact that women can not only participate in but also lead in sectors traditionally dominated by men.

Through her example, Ibi-Ada has opened doors for many others, inspiring a new generation of women to break barriers and reach their full potential in Nigeria’s energy industry.
